Father’s Day comes and goes and we survive that well. We have carry out food. I am proud of myself for buying the gifts and cards two days in advance instead of the day of the event and even happier that I didn’t misplace them. We return home from Father’s Day Dinner to find that the a/c has died. Of course, our spring has been awfully cold and wet out here, so at first I wasn’t too bothered. Until I checked the weather forecast for this coming week and saw that we’re going to be hit by our first major heat wave of the season- temps in the 90s.

Did I mention we have no air?

The heating/cooling guy arrives to assess the problem. It must be a big problem because he’s here the entire day and still needs to bring in a second opinion guy.

Finally, the moment we’re all waiting for. Unfortunately my husband’s not here to interpret the lab findings for me.

This is what I hear:

Mrs. Matlen, the coil is hooked to the other unit and that’s not good because the old unit is not efficient and besides we don’t know if you’re under warranty because the new unit is only 3 years old and that should be under warranty but as this coil was pulled from the old unit and oh…do you have a crawl space? Cuz if you do, I’ll be able to see just where that coil is hooked up to. I’ll be right back. Ok, I’m back. Bad news. The last guy that worked on this used the old coil from the old unit and put it on the new unit. And oh, the compression blew out so I have to see if the whole unit is kapoot or if we can save it. But y’know, I have to check that other coil. Which by the way is spurting out your cold air into the crawl space and that’s a waste of energy. So I’ll have Mike come out and he’ll give you the options, there. But hmm…we should check out this whole thing cuz the other compressor, well that might be bad. We just don’t know. Whoever put that other coil in made a mess of things and y’know, it’s not cost-effective now cuz you’re losing cold air. And probably heat, too, in the winter. So if the old coil is no good, that’ll cost about $1,500. Unless the new coil is under warranty, in which case you have a few options.

Then I hear what I call the “blah blah blahs” because he’s lost me and I’ve given up.

Do you want me to go over the options with you, Miss?”

Do you ever wonder if it’s your ADHD that makes every day life confusing to you? Or do some people actually follow these kinds of conversations and make sense of them?

It’s hot. I’m heading to the mall. Remind me to pick up a fan.

And problems are exacerbated when your husband has ADD too! Terry, we just had problems with our AC too, but mainly due to our lack of keeping up with routine maintenance - we hadn't changed the batteries in the thermostat so the old ones corroded and shorted out the thing; we hadn't changed the filter in let's say forever, and it was totally clogged and unusable. Thankfully this time everything was covered by warranty (we just got the system last year!), but such won't be the case in the future. We pay large amounts of money for these things, but are absolutely horrible with routine maintenance - and the unit even tells us when to perform certain checks, change batteries, etc. Pathetic!

Heehee. My friend's sister made a copy of it for me and mailed it to me! And last night we were chatting while we watched Johnny on Letterman and swooned.

I can't wait to meet this friend, as I'm going there in August and I'm so excited to see her in person. I've met a couple people in person who I've met online. This is the farthest I've traveled though to do so, as before it was a drive from Salisbury, MD to West Virginia. But since Iowa is a 15 hour drive, Id' just as soon fly! LOL!

BTW, did you see the cover of Vanity Fair? Johnny Depp is on the cover. But you probably already know this!

I think you're right. Not paying attention when people are talking to us- perhaps holding up a sign would work better : )

I've mad many really good friends online, too. And I've met many of them in person, which can be *really* interesting!

And also, I think, why sometimes if someone just starts talking to us while we're focused on something else we don't hear them, but if they get our attention and wait for us to notice them before we start talking, it's all good.

Heehee. And yeah, her voice did match her e-mails and she does tend to type the way she talks. She's very outgoing and talkative, and I tend to be very introverted and shy till I get comfortable with people. Then it's hard to get me to shut up! LOL!

It was fun to hear each other's accents too, as she's from Iowa and I'm in Maryland. I also got to hear her talk in an Irish accent, which is cute. She does a pretty good one.

I find that many, if not most with ADHD, tend to be visual or multisensory. That's why visual cues are typically so helpful for us.
How great that you're going to meet her in person. Did her voice match her emails?

Getting back to the subject, I wonder if it's common for people with ADHD to be visual learners? It's so easy to get lost and confused on steps when someone's giving them orally, and having them written down seems to really help. Unless of course it's taped and you can play it over and over to write it down.

It was funny when she did call, as we got to hear each other's voices for the first time and were both giggling and laughing! We didn't quite know what to say at first cause we were so used to chatting by e-mail! But we just kept talking and talking about our favorite subject, Pirates of the Caribbean and Johnny Depp, and before long we couldn't seem to shut up! LOL!

We just talked until her internet started working again, around the time we usually signed off to go to bed! At least we know that when I visit her in August, we won't have too hard a time talking without the benefit of e-mail!

Ha! It's good you're both more email oriented. People I know who love the phone just don't get the email thing. I'm glad it's working out for you!
