Last week, I recorded a show (to be aired later this month) for Tara McGillicuddy's ADHD Support Talk Radio show, speaking on the topic of ADHD and Hypersensitivities. As we were talking, it became very clear that this time of year can be most challenging for those of us who, along with our ADHD, experience tremendous difficulties with sensory overwhelm. And it makes…

Ten million years ago, when I was in Junior High School, I was forced to take the dreaded Home EC classes. I must have known early on that I'd need a decent career, since I'd never cut it as a homemaker. Cooking was a nightmare. I clearly remember being given the smallest kitchen in the smallest cubby with students who, like me, didn't know the difference between a teaspoon and a teacup. It's always been my personal theory, since I learned that I might have ADD and that my oldest son has autism, that ADD and autism are related. I understand my son's sensitivities to sounds. I understand his grumpiness when he's hungry and/or tired. And I understand why he does some of the seemingly strange things that he does whereas "nomal people" don't get him. I have always felt that I was a go-between translating my sons' behaviors to "normal-types." Not only because I'm his mother, but because I can see and feel everything from his perspective only without the severity of it.
I am easily startled by loud sounds and I get grumpy if there's a lot of noise in my house. So does my son. I can only stand the simulation of public places for a few hours, he's the same way, etc.
What do you think of the theory that ADD and autism are related?
Sorry it's taken so long to respond to your question. I participated in the Danskin Mini Triathlon a few years ago and this photo is of me (to the far left) under our training team's tent, after the race. I have no motivation to exercise whatsoever, but there was a very structured training program that I took part in (I knew it would get me to exercise!) and in the end....I swam 1/2 a mile, biked 12 miles and ran 3 miles! Thanks for asking!
