Resources, Books offering a Christian / Bible-based Perspective on ADD/ADHD

In the past few months, I’ve been going through a "part 2" healing of my  ADD…a part 2 grieving and learning to embrace this brain process… it's not easy....

I am a Christian and my faith is very important to me. A few months ago, I was trying to look for a book on ADD that had a Christian perspective to help me with my struggles. One day, while I was on Google, I found two really helpful books called "ADD/ADHD, Christianity and the Church" written by Pastor Jerry Seiden and Jonathan Halverstadt and BORN LOSERS or LEADERS? A Positive Spiritual Perspective on ADD/ADHD  also written by Pastor Jerry Seiden.  I want to recommend these books to other Christian moms.  They are such a BIG help to me, that's why I want to let other Moms know about it too. I finished reading both books.

I never even knew that Christian books on ADD/ADHD existed until recently!

I purchased both of the e-books directly from the publisher.   It is available as a hard cover, an instant download e-book or as an audio book in (www.spiritofhopepublishing.com). The site takes PayPal, which I really like. They sell the book on Amazon.com too, but it’s so much more expensive (and Amazon doesn’t sell the e-book and audio book versions).

Here's a forward in ADD/ADHD, Christianity & the Church written by Dwaine McCallon, MD, Author of Treatable Criminal Minds and How to Keep Your ADD /ADHD Child Out of Prison (by the way, Dr. Amen also wrote a forward, in the book)

“This new guide by Seiden and Halverstadt will be unsurpassed for
Christian counselors, physicians, therapists, lay counselors, and for
patients. It is truly a masterpiece in accurate medical understanding
and for the Master’s loving touch felt on each page. I sensed the Lord
Himself work by His Spirit through their hearts and pens.

This book is an effective tool to educate and equip the local church
and individual Christians. It imparts the safety, support, structure, and
spirituality that is required to redeem and heal the broken within our
communities. Jerry and Jonathan address the needs of those with ADD,
but the insights of this book transcend any specific disorder or disability.
They speak to the issue of Truth and the freedom that the Truth
imparts. What a double-barreled and precious gift God has given the
authors to spread the Lord’s truth of heart, spirit, and soul by this new
book.

The important and spiritual verities that Jerry and Jonathan share
are given with authority and authenticity. These men have earned the
right to impart this message to others. They have lived and experienced
the truth they speak. Their lives and this book are a powerful
message of hope to all who read or hear their words. And to the pastors,
healers, and counselors who read the book, it will be seen as a gift
and kept as guide.

I have recommended this book to countless patients, friends, and
fellow professionals. I offer it to pastors who struggle with the stress
of ministry, marriage, everyday life, or even ADD.
I am honored to call Jerry and Jonathan my brothers in Christ and
my friends. "

Pastor Jerry (one of the authors of the book) also has a church called "ADD Church" (www.addchurch.org).  The ADD Church has podcasts regarding various ADD/ADHD issues with a spiritual perspective, which I found very helpful in my healing process in http://feeds.feedburner.com/AddChurch

I hope these resources will be a big help to some of you.

Let me know if any of you know of any other Christian resources on ADD/ADHD.

Take Care.

Roselle

thank you so much , Mary Beth
You're welcome=) ....these resources have been a BIG help. God has been using Pastor Jerry to speak to me and my husband about the ADD related issues we're recently dealing with. Don't forget to check the podcasts in http://feeds.feedburner.com/AddChurch Take Care!
Mary Beth, I also invited you to be one of my friends....if it's okay with you, I hope you will accept....I would love to learn from you (how you successfully managed your ADD, how you thrived and embraced the brain that God gave you...)
By the way, my husband and I also follow Dave Ramsay's principles...he' taught us how to get out of debt, which is a huge blessing in our lives...

Hi am new to this sight and very interested in what you are talking about. I have just recently been diagnosed with ADD. I have known there was something different all my life, but just figured it out when My oldest child was diagnosed. I am overwhelmed by how anyone could have ever missed it in me. I am going to try to look up some of the resources you have provided, my problem is I get so distracted by all the other things on the pages that I forget where I was going and never get there. Thank you for the info, and I am hoping to find some comfort and peace in it.
Hi Tonya, I understand...it's not easy being diagnosed later in life...but at least better late than never...Being diagnosed is a blessing, at least we know what we are dealing with...Pastor Jerry (the writer and the one who leads the ADD / ADHD Church was also diagnosed later in life (in his 40s)...so he understands and his writings reflect this understanding...
To simplify the info I typed up, here are the 2 links:

I also really like being part of "Moms with ADD ADHD" because we women can understand each other and relate to each other.

Take Care!
Oh by the way, another good book that I read is "Women with Attention Deficit Disorder" by Sari Solden. I read it while I was in school, and I just recently re-read it again...it's not a Christian book, but it's really helpful.

Can't wait to read those, and visit the site! I was helped so much by the "You Mean I'm Not Lazy, Stupid, or Crazy?", and I'm very much looking forward to reading Terry's books. The more the better, I say!
Hi Everyone - I know I am late to this discussion (but I'm sure you're not surprised considering I have ADD!).

I just wanted to add - if you like Christian music, the front man and leader of the Christian band Casting Crowns is a Youth Pastor and he has ADD. He talks about it at his concerts and he wrote a book about writing the first album (self titled I think, but I can't quite remember and if I go to look it up, I'll probably get distracted and never finish this post!)

Anyway, he doesn't address the ADD in a practical way, but it's more of a "case study" of someone who is in his calling and very successful but still struggles with ADD/ADHD.

Anyway, thought some of you might be interested. And thank you Roselle for the feedback on those two books - I have seem them before, but hadn't looked into them as of yet.
Thanks Tracy, I listen to Casting Crowns, (their song "Praise You in the Storm" and "Who am I?" are some of my favourites) but I didn't know he had ADD...

I went and listened to a podcast...he's very difficult to listen to. Slow and disjointed. My opinion. Funny how certain types of speakers appeal to others..he may be very good for some..Didn't work for me. Thanks for sharing, though..I like finding new resources and am always looking.
Hi Marie, that's okay, I guess everyone has a preferrence for speaking style...there are some podcasts that jump around, but it's okay with me since it's a lot like the thoughts in my brain. However, I still highly recommend the book "ADD/ADHD, Christianity and the Church"--it's well written and easy to follow. The e-book is less than $5.00, so there's not a lot of risk to try it out. You can click on the picture in the website to purchase it. Take Care.
