Wanted to share this story with people who might actually understand how such a thing can happen. :)
Would you believe that I inadvertently signed up to bring food for teachers during parent/teacher conferences at a school where our family doesn't even have children attending this year?
How is this possible? Our daughter moved from the jr. high to high school this year. Our son is in his final year of grade school this year, so will move to jr. high next year. I didn't bother to ask to have myself taken off the PTA e-mail list at the jr. high, since I'd just be asking to be put back on again next year. This seems reasonable and efficient, right? LOL
So, when conference time rolled around, I got an e-mail from the high school PTA asking for food contributions for teacher lunches, and signed up in the "I will bring whatever is needed most--let me know later" category. I saw, and deleted, the 1st e-mail from the jr. high PTA, thinking it would be just awful to sign up for that accidentally! I should also say that it was hard to tell which school the e-mails were from, because they didn't specifically say the school name, I had to guess based on the e-mail addresses of the other recipients.
As the time drew near, an e-mail came saying they were still lacking some items, asking people to sign up. For some reason I didn't think to verify which school it was from at this point, and sent an e-mail back saying I was one of the people who volunteered to bring whatever was still lacking at the end, and should I pick something on the list or would they let me know? The organizer replied, saying "Sure! You can bring a big salad Wednesday!
A couple days later I got an e-mail asking me to bring chicken salad for a minimum of 15 people on Tuesday, with 2 dozen rolls! I replied that there must be some confusion, I was already bringing a salad on Wed., and that Michelle had told me so.
"I'm confused too," the organizer replied. "We don't have a Michelle helping to organize this. Could she be from another school?"
Yup, she could, and yup, she was.
In the end, I decided what the heck! Why not just take the salad for the teachers at the jr. high? They taught my daughter, and will teach my son, and with yummy pre-cut bagged salads they don't take as much preparation as they used to. So rather than make the organizers scramble to find someone else because I am such a goofball, I just took it.
One of my friends told me she's made a mental note to forward me the e-mails for every sign-up project she's involved with. I've made a mental note to read every e-mail she sends very, very carefully. :)
