just wondered if anyone else did. i dont mean put on running gear and go out for a run, i mean, on the school run, out with the dogs, etc, i feel the need to run, sprint, as fast as i can - have felt like this all my life - run, or get on my bicycle and pedal like crazy............... i do it less these days, as it seems less acceptable for a late 30, 40 something to run for no reason, with shopping, or children, or the wrong clothes on!!!!

well, today i ran. i am down and needed to let off steam. only trouble is i have my 2 and a half year old in the buggy, and my 3 dogs with me. before i know it i am running like the wind - high speed sprinting, it feels good.

it feels good until the buggy wheel hits a rock or summat, and the buggy stops dead and flips, and i - at great speed - somersault over the buggy onto concrete. :)

my little girl lands face down. teeth through top lip, nose blue. i have no idea what i do until later - one finger, one wrist, one elbow, one side of ribcage, one leg.

we both go to hospital. we're ok. shaken, bruised, cut, and oh so terribly guilty :(

what do you do when its all inside your head and too much :( where do you go with it? how do you make it feel better???

this didnt - now i feel terrible - i feel like the worlds worst mum, and i hurt all over.
life has been better ............ :(

I definitely understand running to feel better, although I tend to do it in the more traditional way...putting on the right clothes and going outside for a run. I have gained so much weight these last few years though that running is very difficult anymore so I am looking for other solutions still, I usually walk for a long time or beat up my pillow or wrestle with one of the kids, although they are so big now thats not as good of an option, because I usually get hurt. Why dont you actually try getting some running gear and going out for a daily run with a jogging stroller on a path or something....so you and your daughter dont get hurt again by the shopping carts? Its much cheaper to buy the right stuff than pay hospital bills and there are tons of places to run that are safe and have few bumps or rocks or anything like that and if you schedule it into your day, you will look forward to it and it will help you feel less angsty over the rest of your day! I cant wait till I am smaller and can run again..Im really looking forward to it! Good for you for figuring out something that works for you!
thanx for replying rebekah :)

i'm in the uk, so theres nothing to pay when we get hurt ;) and i had a 3 wheeler 'running' type buggy, but the tyre kept getting punctures and driving me doolally :( so i gave it away :(

i will have to wait for my littlest to be at school i guess and then i can run alone, or with my dogs ............... :(
I am so sorry that happened to you! I don't get that need to run feeling, but I do know the feeling when my ADD effects my kids' lives in a negative way. My small version is forgetting my son's lunch today. I nearly forgot to pack it, but got it done. I rushed him to school and got home and never noticed it was sitting there all day. It was plain in front of my face and didn't see it. I even MOVED it out of the way so I could make lunch for the little ones at home. I got a call from school saying he didn't have a lunch, but they scraped stuff together for him. He has ADD and he is swimming to find his way in ADD home.

I think we did have one trip to the hospital for stitches for one thing that I may attribute to by ADD. I can't beat myself up for it.

The flat tires do stink, but you need three wheels for jogging. I am a stroller addict in my spare time so I have a wealth of useless stroller knowledge.

I hope everyone has a speedy recovery.

Sorry to hear about your accident.

There is a ton of proof out there that running and exercise of any kind is good for you mind and body so I hope you dont use this as an excuse to stop :)

Is there anybody in your support network or a neighbor or other mum you could leave your little one with when you feel the need to sprint??? or is another type of exercise that you and the little one can do together???

I will be praying that you find something that works for both of you :D

i dont have a support network :( i am a loner and i moved hundreds of miles from where i grew up. i have been away for 12 years, and have my kids, and my partner, and thats it really. i DID have a friend, but she decided she wasnt anymore, just a couple of months ago - made me feel 11 years old again. i have never understood the whole friendship thing. i cant make them, and if i do, i cant keep them!!!!
i exercise alot, so dont worry about that, lol - i am just under 8 stone and a vegetarian health freak, so i dont exercise for a physical need - just a mental one. i still walk my dogs alot, and walk the kids to school and back etc :) its just i need to work out when i get that rush, its a kind of fight or flight thing, and i'm not a fighter.............. :( x
I work in an Emergency room and see this type of accident regularly. It ALWAYS invloves dogs or a dog. Can you run without the dogs?? It is far safer. I have never in over 20 years of working in the Emergency Department seen a stroller accident when it was just a parent running with a stroller. When you hit a rock and it is only the stroller to keep upright, the parents manages to do that (they may fall but the stroller and child is OK). Throw a dog into the mix and all bets are off.

I agree that we need to run or walk or cycle or be outside exercising in some way. I walk five miles a day. If I miss my walk, I feel like I am going loony tunes. My 11 year old who is primarily inattentive begs every day to walk with me as he needs it as well (he usually comes along with me and It is a great way to catch up with what is going on in his life. I tell him that he will not be able to come on my walk if he does not finish his homework and it always motivates him to get it all done... That is how much this kid needs to walk!!).

There was a study done a few years back that showed that being outside greatly improved ADHD symptoms. The citing is at the National Wildlife Federation website which has just started a campaign called "Be Out There" or something like that. They report on all the health benefits of being outside (including improving ADHD). I hope that you and the baby are doing well after the fall, remember to ice all those sore areas. I stopped walking our dog so much when our first son was born. I felt bad, but I just couldn't handle both. I think we have the only dog aggressive Golden Retriever on earth, so I need to be able to cross the street freely when I walk her in case other dogs are coming. I can't do that with a stroller.

I feel so much better being outside, especially during the day. I should ask my brother how he is doing with his ADD now that he has moved to Norway. All of that dark would be terrible for me. The last two days I have felt the longer days and really have been much more productive.
I too have always felt a need to run, and I haven't been able to lately, with four children and three under the age of 5, but I just got a new pair of running shoes (Brooks Ariels for my overly flat feet) and so I think with Spring coming I will break out of the house and put the wee tykes in our jogger a double Chariot. I discovered running at age 10 and I think it literally kept me alive through a very dark and confusing time in my life, the time before I knew why I felt so crazy and why everyone probably thought I was crazy!! Ballet helps me to focus my ADHD brain and running helps me to sort out my thoughts and live in the moment and get rid of my restless energy cycle and replace it with a more healthy energy glow! Glad to know I am not the only one who is a compulsive runner as well!

thanks jessica - you get it :) yay!!!!! xxx
I hope that you and your DD are ok!

When I have a feeling I do it... I'm in my 3rd trimester and if I feel like running I'm running or else I can't sit still at work... right now I have a job sitting at reception and doing nothing.... What I wouldn't give to just let off excess energy so I surf all day... lol not fun...

Is it ok to run with a wrap? or carrier or only use a jogging stroller?
IMHO I would think that you and the baby would be more comfortable using a jogging stroller and if something were to happen the stroller would protect the baby
